How do paper or cardboard boxes become the most popular packaging now and even in the future?

Paper or cardboard boxes grow popular for good reasons. 
The invention of plastic has greatly benefited our lives. It's characteristics of anti-corrosion, waterproof, transparency, low cost and so on made it flooded around us...then after all these years' use, people are shocked to find the island of plastic debris in Pacific. Not to mention the daily plastic wastes around our neighborhoods. So finally does the human kind realize one of the worst of disadvantages of plastic: It can not be degraded by bacteria. 

While paper is recyclable and fully decomposable in the environment. it's a small wonder that the world began to put their eyes back to paper/cardboard packaging. More and more countries  ban plastic bags. Big companies jump on the wagon to advocate the use of non-toxic and harmless all-paper green packaging.

"Go green" trend in packaging industry

1. Against excessive packaging 

The primary purpose of the packaging is to protect the product from damage, to facilitate transportation, storage and customer carrying. On this basis, the packaging that's aesthetically pleasing will help boost the sale of the product. Proper packaging is undoubtedly necessary and beneficial. However, over-packaging that provides protection, convenience, communication, and decoration more than needed is bringing packaging to the other extreme. 

On one hand, over-packaging leads to waste of resources. Take cosmetic cardboard packaging as an example. The most common corrugated cardboard mainly includes 3-layer, 5-layer and 7-layer. In the developed countries, 3-layer cardboard accounts for 90%, while in China, 5-layer is common, which makes China spend over US$ 200 million extra a year to import paper pulp and cardboard, compared to using 3-layer cardboard. Simply put, using 3-layer corrugated cardboard would help China save 1/3 of the cost. 
On the other hand, excessive packaging has caused severe environmental pollution. The annual emissions of packaging waste in China now account for 1/3 of municipal solid waste, and the proportion in volume is even up to 1/2. To make matters worse, emissions are still increasing at a rate of 10% per year. furthermore, it's emissions are added at a rate of 10% per year.
